Slow Cookin’ Sunday

Today was a slow cooker kind of day! David loves applesauce so I wanted to try making my own — it was so easy! Peeling took the longest, but I developed a nice system.

First cut in half horizontally.

Second cut off the top and bottom of the apple.

Third cut off the peel and then slice in half.

Last cut out the core and then slice!

I liked this system, but am definitely open to hearing about an easier way!

Crock Pot Applesauce
Slightly Adapted from Skinnytaste

8 apples, peeled and cored
1/3 cup brown sugar, unpacked
1 cinnamon stick
1 tsp lemon juice
Dash of nutmeg

Peel, core, and slice apples.
Add all ingredients to crock pot.
Set crock pot to low and cook for 4-6 hours.
Stir every hour or so.
Enjoy!

This made the house smell warm and cinnamon-y. Tasted great too! I asked David for his official review and he said: “mm-mm good” while rubbing his stomach. It was like something out of a commercial – very cheesy applesauce commercial. 🙂

Be sure you save the tops of your apples! I used mine to make the cutest little peanut butter sandwiches.

Going, going, gone!

What are some other great crockpot recipes I should try?

  1. Have to admit your “system” seems too complicated for me. I’d just use a potato peeler. However, if you have bunches of apples to peel there is nothing quite as handy as an apple peeler/corer/slicer. Get the kind that actually clamps onto your counter or table. The suction cup ones don’t seem very good to me. Homemade applesauce is so good!
